OCTOBER 6th UPDATE
11:30PM
Our mother's condition improved in incremental steps since we last wrote.
We are happy to share with you some good news.
On Monday, October 4th, the operation to repair Mom's right went quickly and well. Dr. Zahir reported that he successfully reattached her tendons, which were torn, but not completely severed. She will be able to begin physical therapy to regain the use of that hand in less than three weeks. Mom recovered well from the operation, which only required a regional pain blocker, not a general anesthesia.
By yesterday, October 5th, Mom was able to open her eyes, respond to commands, even say her name and my name (Phong).
I am happy to report a small miracle today, October 6th. Mom woke and stayed up for an extended period. She told the nurses she has good children. She passed the critical swallow test. Even though the feeding tube through her nose irritated her, she was able to finish a liquid meal and went back to sleep. This development confirmed to us that it's time to take the next step toward rehabilitation.
I was initially skeptical of the doctors' order to transfer Mom out of Fairfax Hospital to a rehabilitation facility while she hadn't regained full consciousness. In that condition, she would have had to go to a skilled nursing center, a form of warehousing with a feeding tube, until she gets better, or not. With consciousness and other abilities, she is being transferred to an acute rehabilitation center in Mount Vernon (21 miles away), where she can begin her physical, occupational, and cognitive therapy even before her pelvis has healed sufficiently for her to stand up (in about 4 weeks). We are happy that the doctors have decided that no operation is needed for the pelvis.
We attribute Mom's recovery to all the prayers and good wishes from all her friends and family. Our collective prayers have been answered.
Even as the days of October are getting colder and shorter in Virginia, they are also becoming more vibrantly beautiful. We continue to set goals, and to work and pray toward those goals. One of our next goals is have Mom fully alert and healthy to celebrate her 70th Birthday on October 15th with us and her grandchildren. Another goal is to have Mom back on her feet and home by Thanksgiving, if not sooner.
It's still one day at a time for us, but the outlook is decidedly brighter today.
With thankful hearts, we are
All Mom's Children
